Guyodo Pittsburgh April 19-20

On Saturday and Sunday April 19 & 20 1-5pm, Bill Bollendorf presents "Urban Alchemy" - Guyodo will be in attendance

Announcement from Galerie Macondo in Pittsburgh:

Frantz Jacques, aka Guyodo, is an artist who lives in the neighborhood of Gran Rue in downtown Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  Its a busy area, alive with the sounds of woodworkers,  auto mechanics,  printing presses and other small enterprises, all of which generate refuse, used up junk. Guyodo and the other ingenious artists of the Gran Rue, known collectively as Atis Rezistans collect the detritus and transform it into mystical figures which pay homage to the Gods of Haitian Vodou. There are hundreds and hundreds of these effigies standing in alleys and hanging on walls in the neighborhood; a permanent exhibit of art for the people who do not frequent museums.

On April 6th, Guyodo arrived in Pittsburgh and has been working with our junk, collected here and there. It will be interesting to see what he produces, working in a different environment, in a short period of time and with different materials. In Haiti, he works mainly with auto parts: used oil filters, gas tanks, mufflers and also salvaged building materials. In Pittsburgh it is mostly the household junk that clutters all of our houses. We will present his production on April 19 & 20.
